The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab

3.0

I really wanted to like this book as it was a highly anticipated read on my list, but I found it somewhat difficult to finish.

The writing is beautiful and the overall plot and world building in this and the related series is interesting. While the book has a lot of elements (magic, political intrigue, adventure, hints of romance), the pace felt very slow and didn’t seem to pick up much throughout.

The back and forth timeline isn’t anything uncommon but the number of POVs and how often they switched between them made it difficult to feel attached to any specific characters or their subplots.

I can see why this book is well loved by a lot of people and that it appeals to a great many fantasy readers. Truthfully, I can appreciate the flow and imagery of Schwab’s writing style but I didn’t feel it was enough to keep my interest.
