andyshute 's review for:
All Quiet on the Western Front
by Erich Maria Remarque
I've been meaning to read this for some time and finally picked it up only to get the sense that I may have read it at school, many years back.
It's a deeply affecting, powerful novel with such a vivid and heartrending depiction of the 'Great War' and the impact it had on the people involved. For me, being written from the perspective of the German side creates a stark reminder that it wasn't just the 'good guys' and 'the enemy', it was just people doing what was asked of them by people higher up the chain. The humanity and the waste and the sheer horror of it all is portrayed with beautiful imagery, clarity of prose and an increasingly frantic and unsettling tone.
Very powerful, very moving and a must read.

I liked this so much I forked out for the Folio Society edition. It is lovely, muted in design with a selection of black and white photos inside.
