Lavinia by Ursula K. Le Guin
4.0

Although I read a lot of scifi and fantasy in my teens, I never read any Ursula Le Guin, as far as I remember. That lacuna is hereby corrected, although this is "kind of" historical fiction. But since it's based on the Aeneid, it could be classed as fantasy too.

I studied the Aeneid for Latin A-Level and knew chunks of book four off by heart. But I can't remember anything about the last six books, on which this is based. I never cared for "pious Aeneas" as a character either, because of his treatment of Dido.

This is ultimately a slight tale, but Le Guin writes like a poet, and I like the way she creates a complete world, full of convincing domestic and cultural detail. It was bold to make Lavinia aware that she's a fictional character too -- it adds an extra dimension to the story. I will probably read moreLe Guin, if I find a book that suits me.
