The Human Stain by Philip Roth
4.0

First let me say, despite the stars, I did not enjoy this book. I did not enjoy the story. I did not enjoy the words so densely packed that each sentence felt a paragraph and each paragraph felt a chapter. This story felt like I would read and read and read until my eyes bled and still the page was not finished.

So why the 4 stars? Because Philip Roth is a writer. Despite that I could not care for Coleman Silk, I could not care for Faunia Farley or Les Farley or Delphine Roux, despite everyone you meet in this story, Roth weaves a tale with twists and turns that surprise and continue to surprise until the last page. And despite that I did not enjoy the story, I still found myself falling into certain parts of the story, being carried away, being interested in what was happening.

I will read Roth again. He is one of the great American writers for a reason. But I think not for a long while. This book burned up any interest I have in Philip Roth for a good while.
