Not-Sew-Wicked Stepmom, Vol. 1 by 이르, Iru

funny lighthearted

3.75

This is a pretty straightforward fairy tale-like story about a former villain who has a big change of heart (literally, her soul was swapped with someone else). The more interesting elements of the story come far too late in the volume like the introduction of the brutally honest magical mirror and a potential murder plot. Lily, in the body of Abigail, is a little too overzealous about pleasing Blanche and there's an emphasis on gift-giving to express affection which I found to be excessive and problematic. Bizarrely, Lily/Abigail never actually gets around to demonstrating her skill and love as a clothing designer in this first volume. For example, I'm surprised she didn't go ahead and repair the shredded bunny doll herself. But I'm assuming this aspect could appear in later volumes.

Despite it's faults, I loved the art style, some of the comedic beats, how clever Lily/Abigail can be (e.g. the invisible dress scene) and the body positivity scene at the end of the volume. I like that Lily/Abigail doesn't hold back or hesitate about doing the right thing. Overall, it's a wholesome story but the first volume could have been stronger.
