The Push by Ashley Audrain

3.0

This was a very interesting book. There was so much going on that it was like I was reading 2-3 books mixed together. On one hand you have the story of Blythe, Violet, and Fox. I found this to be the most interesting of the three. It was very suspenseful and nerve-wracking at times. Then you have the story of Etta, who is Blythe's grandmother and her life when she was younger. Thirdly, there was Blythe when she was a young girl and her relationship with her mother. I think I get what the author was going for: the connections of these three generations of women. However, the story of Violet didn't seem to fit.

It took me a little bit to get used to the second person narration. I think it could've been done in regular first person. The story was so much geared towards her telling her ex-husband I guess.

I don't really even know how to rate this book. I am not sure what the novel was trying to be, a psychological thriller, a literary story about generations of mental illness among women? I don't know.

It was definitely a page turner though and I wanted to keep reading to see what would happen next (in the present day timeline).
