I adored this one so much. I was expecting a typical “summer read” and ended up very pleasantly surprised. After a scandal that finds her getting written off her long running TV show, Libby escapes to her childhood summer home on a small island off the coast of Maine. A fact that the acting sheriff, Fisher, is immediately irritated by. He is dealing with a lot between being the “go to” man on the island for everything from wrangling wandering goats to delivering packages, his “actual” job as a network security specialist, and being a single parent to his nine year old niece, Sutton. The setup seems like a typical grumpy-sunshine/fish out of water type of deal, but it was so much more. It is a story about grief and the knots we can sometimes tie ourselves into in the name of honoring someone’s memory. It’s about standing up for what is right and overcoming and healing from our traumas. It’s about fighting that people-pleasing urge and learning to say “NO”. It’s about friends who become family and learning that it’s okay to lean on others for support now and then. Even though it dealt with some difficult topics, there were so many heartwarming parts that it just left me with an overall fuzzy sort of happy feeling at the end. The tiny cameo from one of my favorite bromances, Beckett and Cortney, didn’t hurt either 😉 I hope to get more stories of the residents of Monhegan in the future!
