Suzanne Collins’ first prequel to The Hunger Games is fantastic. The exploration of Snow’s psyche via the inner monologue is marvellous, an unsettling portrait of an ordinary privileged young teenager making all the wrong choices out of his entitlement and lust for power. A riveting and tragic character study, a powerful story of ambition, cruelty and betrayal triumphing over love, loyalty and friendship, Ballad emerges as a magnificent entry in the series. And through it all, Collins keeps you hooked with compelling characters, a phenomenally paced story and some truly killer lines (including some breathtaking final few paragraphs).
