Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
5.0

I have read this classic masterpiece numerous times in my life. First as a teen, then as a young adult and even later as an adult with grown children. This time, I listened to the audiobook version. As I listened, I anticipated what was next, listened and cried as a boy worked hard for what he wanted (his dogs), faithfully trained and cared for them. I cried as they repaid his love and kindness with love of their own as Old Dan and Little Ann fought against the mountain lion that would have taken Billy's life had they not worked to defeat him. They did this out of love and loyalty. They also both died--Old Dan of his injuries while trying to save his master and Little Ann of a broken heart. Where they are buried, a red fern grows up between them. It is said that the red fern grows where true love was.
