I'm in tears!
But good tears.
The tears you cry when you are just so happy!
When I first started this book, I was pretty skeptical. It kinda bored me and definitely creeped me out. A guy who is almost 30, still living with his mom, is given a job to read your emails? Yeah, creepy.
But I kept going. I had faith in Rainbow Rowell's writing! And this book did not disappoint. It had the cutesy parts that made me squeal (like in Fangirl), and it had the parts that tugged on your heart-strings (like in Eleanor and Park). It was the perfect meet in the middle book. I'm thinking (maybe...possibly...) this might by my favorite Rainbow Rowell book (I still have yet to read Landline so those ranks aren't finalized until I've read that too).
The characters:
1. Lincoln (first off, love the name cause it reminds me of my nephew), is a shy but sweet computer nerd. He is at a stand-still in life. He wakes up, goes to work, goes home, goes to sleep. And repeats that everyday. He's just there. Not really living, but alive. He's content with that. But deep down, he knows there's something missing in his life.
I loved the journey that Lincoln goes on to discover himself. Its something that I've watched people go through before. Being in university, it's something I'm kinda going through too. So it was very relatable but at the same time it wasn't because everyone goes through that journey in their own special way.
2. Beth is a quirky movie reviewer for a newspaper. She drinks lots of coffee, has loads of movie knowledge (obviously), is very supportive of her best friend, and has a beautiful musician boyfriend.
I loved Beth! She is can be both shy and confident. She's awkward but so adorable. I want to be her best friend!
3. Jennifer is a timid but cute copy editor for the newspaper. She has a husband who adores her, wants her best friend to find a happy ending, and is very scared of getting pregnant.
Jennifer, like Beth, is awkward but also adorable. I would also love to be her best friend. I will just join Beth and Jennifer's little group. Their friendship is amazing and very realistic. A lot of the time, the emails between those two would remind me of conversations between my best friend and I. They had the "this is probably really creepy/weird and anyone else would totally judge me for it but I'm telling you cause I know you won't judge me" type of friendship. Which also includes "i don't like this but I'm supporting you cause you're my best friend" and "yeah it definitely is your fault but I'm still going to help you come up with someone else you can blame."
What I think made this book truly beautiful is the fact that Lincoln wasn't the only character who went through a self-discovering journey. It seemed like almost every character I met was/would/did go through a self-discovering journey.
Also there's the underlying message that there is always someone out there for everyone. Your Prince Charming/Princess will come along. Don't lose faith!
Absolutely loved this book! Can't stop rereading the ending. It will definitely be going on my favorite shelf. And I will be recommending it to anyone that I can!
