Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome by Clarabelle van Niekerk, Liezl Venter

5.0

Understanding Sam and Asperger Syndrome is a bright picture book that explains the main character - Sam - and his struggles to fit in. Although many children struggle to find friends, Sam has an especially difficult time because he is eventually diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. The book portrays Sam as someone who loves to giggle and play his cello, but who has trouble with new touches or loud sounds. Eventually Sam and his parents go to the doctor, where he receives his diagnosis.

The pictures in this book are loud and bright, almost in contrast to the information about how Sam does not like loud sounds. It is a wonderful conversation-starter about inclusion for young students, and one of the books best features is the list of 10 helpful tips for being friends with students with Aspergers. With themes of acceptance and understanding, the end of the book makes it clear that if we understand one another we can all be friends. I read this book on my Kindle.
