The Ex-Wives Club
by Sally Hepworth
3.5 stars
I do tend to like these short stories that Amazon publishes because you can read a new-to-you or even trusted author with little commitment (most of these are 1-2 hours on audio).
I've read all of Sally Hepworth's works, so I had to read this one.
In this one, chef and restaurant owner Ian Curley is found dead in his restaurant's walk-in freezer. There's a SLEW of suspects - his 3 ex-wives, his current girlfriend, his 4 employees (2 of which are his children). No one likes him.
And then you have the detectives, which are a fun dynamic because there's a serious female lead detective and then the lazy male junior detective. She has so much antipathy towards him.
As Sally Hepworth is recently divorced, that's likely the source for all this male bashing. Fortunately, it doesn't permeate ALL of her books, so I didn't mind it in this one and understood where it was coming from.
I actually really like the concept of a short detective story. But the problem is that there's far too many suspects for the length. And the title is the Ex-Wives Club and there's very little about their dynamics. I wanted to know more about the ex wives and their friendship.
As far as the detective story goes, it felt very low stakes with no sense of urgency. Likely because this author isn't a crime/detective writer.
