This is more an In Cold Blood style of fictionalised true crime than actual nonfiction. It's an engaging read that separates actual frontier life from mythology and humanises the individuals within their own context, different from how more modern people would react and understand these gruesome tragedies, but I'd prefer it was more up front about how much it embroiders what can actually be known.
