this was an assigned reading for one of the classes i had to take last winter and at the end we had to write a paper formatted like a letter to Chief Robert Joseph. one of the questions on that assignment was whether there was ever a time where i felt namwayut.

and i feel it in all the spaces between grief other people unburden themselves with through me and the laughter i share with those i hold dearest. in the silent company, the squeeze of a hand, the conversations between eyes. any time i feel the most connected to someone in an intimate way is namwayut to me. reading this and getting to know chief robert's story was namwayut to me. it is developing and practicing empathy in the highest level. a kindness and grace towards those we know and do not know. love in the hard spaces. and often times it is in pushing past the confines of our complacency to learn about and carry other people's pain with them.

this book was not an easy read but rather, a necessary read. one that shines light on the darkness that has been covered up for so long.
