Kingdom of the Wicked by Kerri Maniscalco

4.0

I went into this one with high expectations about the romance aspect of it. I thought it was going to be true enemies to lovers complete with kickass character development and well, that is not exactly what I got from this one. However, I am not necessarily too disappointed by that because I do not really like romance novels to begin with. I am the kind of person who doesn't mind if there is romance in a book, but I don't actively go out searching for it either. If a book has romance in it that's cool, but it is not a requirement for me. This one fits that bill to a tee.

Synopsis:
Emilia and Vittoria have been taught their entire lives to fear The Wicked, the demon princes out to steal the lives and souls of witches. Emilia and Vittoria both brush this off as paranoia on their grandmother's part. They think their lives are pretty safe. That is until Emilia's world is ripped apart when Vittoria is found brutally murdered. Emilia will stop at nothing to seek vengeance on her sister and that even means working alongside the very people she had been taught to despise.

:)
I love a good murder mystery and well the mystery in this one was just TOP NOTCH. It kept me guessing until the very end. I loved that and I loved how there were little "twists" sprinkled in throughout that unveiled the very complexity of this world. When I first started reading I did not think this one would be as complex as it was, but dang was I wrong. There are so many layers to this world and I totally underestimated just how complex it could be. With that being said, it could be confusing at times, but overall the action and mystery kept me reading.

:(
The romance in this one is a bit bland. There was not much there in terms of romance so that was a tad bit disappointing for me. I've heard from others that this one was more tension than actual romance and while I do see the tension build-up in this one I just was not convinced it was meaningful enough for my tastes. I felt Emilia could be clueless at times and slightly annoying and there just was not enough backstory on Wrath. Overall, I just felt like the lack of character development made it hard for me to root for the romance. I wish everything was more fleshed out than what it was. I just needed more from these characters.

Overall, a really decent read. Very complex world with a plot that will keep you intrigued and guessing. It can be slow at times, but is definitely gripping at the end where I was just flipping pages to see what was going to happen.

Side note: book two is slated to be New adult so that means automatic preorder for me since that must mean there'll be *spice*...Haha and I said I was not a fan of romance...Spicy romance though? count me in!!
