The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

4.0

I'm not sure how to review this book. I don't know how much of the plot to give away. The book opens with the narrator describing his car accident and how he is in the burn unit. The doctors keep him in a coma for weeks and eventually he begins his long recovery. During this time it is evident that he cannot go back to his old life. Eventually, a woman comes to his room and begins telling him stories. He is sure the woman is not normal, but he likes her visits and makes sure she can get by the nurses. The stories Marianne tells are often about love and involve various sacrifices. I think I kept reading the story just to read these stories. The modern day part of the book at times was hard to read because you go through the recovery from burns and trying to make a new life. Overall I found myself hoping for a happy ending that would probably never come, but I really liked the book. The book is not really light and fluffy or easy reading. The parts about the narrators life before the accident sometimes made me cringe, but it didn't stop me from reading. I think that for a first book this was really amazing.
