DID NOT FINISH
I lost interest in this. Eventually, you start to ask yourself what exactly is the point of everything we're reading? It really is merely a portrait of life as he sees it in Edinburgh. The fact that it was not intended for novel form, of course, contributed to the difficulty; reading it as one would a normal novel doesn't work quite as well. But it never really got me particularly caring about any of the characters.
