Stackpole's style hasn't impressed me in the past (too military, too technical), but it works here, with a new, galaxy-wide threat that requires a full military response. I guess if, say, Vonda McIntyre wrote the book, I'd be complaining that it wasn't military ENOUGH.
(Speaking of military, I see that Karen Traviss is writing some in this series. YES.)
I like that the book is about war, but doesn't glorify it, except among the antagonists. I think that's an important perspective.
