The Pachinko Parlour by Elisa Shua Dusapin
4.0

Ate this up in one subway ride.

Melancholic, minimalist but so so beautiful.
A look into the deepest part of our souls:
Mieko’s fear of not being good enough, and not living up to her mother’s standards.
Henriette’s high hopes for her daughter, that make her forget to act like a mother sometimes.
The Grandmother’s loneliness, living isolated in a place that doesn’t feel like home, while not succeeding very well in building a good relationship with the people that surround her.
The Grandfather’s closedness, too caught up in making the best out of his business, for the family’s sake.
And lastly, Claire, a mother and a teacher for Mieko, a second chance of a daughter for her Grandparents, still learning where and what she wants to be.

It has been a beautiful journey.
