I haven’t read a book in a day in a long time but I devoured this. Electrifying, beautiful, and sensational. This has blown any other circus/side show fiction out of the water and left no survivors. This is the big top show and everything else is a pale imitation.

Avita is such a sharp, living voice and her world is living too. I had to know what happened to her - where she took herself and how. The circus is an ever shifting background - her complicated, unhappy family and their fierce uncomplicated pride in their performance and work is so raw. The writing is uncommonly gorgeous for a first person narrative and each chapter is engrossing no just because of the story but the way it’s told. Avita has the mind of the ring leaders daughter and it lends itself beautifully.

While our protagonist is young this definitely does not suit its YA rating. The themes handled in this work are heavy and adult though - women do not have the luxury of being innocent for long so perhaps having young girls read about the dark monstrosity of womanhood is something much needed in the genre. It’s a beautiful piece of fiction. I want to spoil nothing of the story but oh - what a story it tells. I’ll be thinking about this one for awhile. It’s really a one of a kind. A show you must see.
