This book exceeded all of my expectations, as I thought this book was going to be repeated and boring, and boy was I wrong. This books was everything I did not expect, with moments of terror and hope. I saw the movie before the book and went into this book with a feeling that it would disappoint. I'm glad I read this.

This book is so unique and so well written, I think this is going to stick with me for a very long time. Not knowing how the monsters look, added so much dimension and so much mystery to this book that I honestly just yearn to know how they look like. Which was probably kind of the purpose of this book, because once you've seen what's out there it's already too late. It gets you curious. It got me googling the monsters and made me wonder how it would be like for human beings and curiosity to take over. How would it be like to live your life blind, when you can see very well? To be blindfolded in a world you know has so many wonders? To WANT to see what's out there and who is out there?

Trust was a big concept of this book and it was wonderful to see how this book got written on that. Would you trust a stranger to come in, not to pull down the only safety you have? Would you trust someone not to slit your throat while you are at sleep, just so they would have more rations to live longer? To me, these kind of thoughts made me shiver and think. I wouldn't survive one week in that world, as I'm too curious and want to be aware of what is happening to me.

The story follows two time lines. One in the house with Malorie's friends, and one on the River. Each story getting more terrifying as you go on, and I found that I held my breath at moments! Holding them whenever the characters were exploring something blindly. It really gripped me, and sometimes I didn't sleep well thinking about this book. It had something realistically scary that crawls under the skin.

Do I recommend this book? Definitely.
