The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek
by Kim Michele Richardson
I listened to this book in a day, so clearly I really enjoyed it! As a mountain girl from Appalachia stories from the Appalachians really touch my heart and stick with me. This book will stick with me. For one, I learned so much! I didn't know there were Blue people of eastern Kentucky, I didn't know there was a Horse Library lending service like that. Both very neat facts that took me on a deep dive into the internet information about these unique people. The author does a great job being realistic with a lot of her descriptions of time past attitudes and prejudices and descriptions of poverty in 19th century Appalachia. My heart broke for Bluet/Cussy Mary repeatedly during this tale and also I admired her kind character. A few things that took it back a star for me were that apparently according to reviews she self induces a abortion at the beginning of the book. If that is true it must have been only implied or briefly mentioned because I never even noticed until I saw a review. That is morally objectionable to me. Second, she does have some somewhat disrespectful words for God near the end of the book and as a Christian I found them somewhat saddening. Although I believe in the end she comes to terms with Him. Also, although the ending was satisfactory in some ways I also felt it was a little bit bittersweet and I wished we could've seen a true reconciliation in full for Bluet Cussy Mary and her family to the community and repentance of some of her tormentors. Overall, I would recommend this one for mature readers. There are a few mentions or vague descriptions of rape or attempted rape in the book but nothing graphic or overly sexual that would make it problematic to read for adults.
