Everything about the premises sounded like it would be a great story. It was, unfortunately, an unimaginative ride.
The "Don't fall in love" rule being disproven is the point of the story. We know that's where it's going. It gets there. The rule is never proven to be useful. Instead, the aunt just withheld joy from herself for no reason and then offed herself. A very unnecessary tragecy within an otherwise story that could have been something.
