The Boat by Nam Le

Notes as I'm reading - "Meeting Elise" is one of the best short stories I've ever read. It's amazing how different Le's narrators are from story to story. Their voices and tones are so unlike one another, you'd have no idea the same guy wrote them. Granted, that's the sign of a great writer, but I've found most authors, while excellent in their own right, are not so dynamic.

This line just slayed me:

"He goes on in this vein - nothing I haven't heard before - he eyes so earnest he looks like a cross between a TV evangelist and a cow."
