I'm a huge fan of Egan's exploration of what it might look like if humans were to be able to upload their consciousness to a computer and adjust their code to their liking. I've not seen a better or more thoughtful representation of what that might be like. He took it far, then went further. Some very intriguing ideas that will keep you thinking long after the book is over.
Unfortunately there are a few glaring aspects of the book that are unlikeable in this book because they're simply too unrealistic, making plot holes in the process.
SPOILERS:
1. The whole "dust" theory of processing. There is no explanation for this at all. In the book it's a theory that is proven right but nobody explores why in 7000 years?! It's hinted that they will go on to investigate at the end but why did it take 7000 years and the destruction of their world to start? Very silly.
2. They exist for 7000 years and there is no mention of wars or life altering conflicts in Elysium. Very unrealistic in my opinion. You have millions of superhuman people with big egos and they all just get along because of unlimited resources and an infal ible program?
