Loved this book! I'm obessed with the Characters of Aunt Bubby and Aunty Boo, what amazing, complicated, kind women.
I have a soft spot for stories like this that show childlike innocence in a big adult world. The country lifestyle is so Australian and rich, the games the girls play reminded me of my own childhood.
I wish I studied this book in school, it gives a really wide reaching picture of an Aboriginal Australian family. It showed a beautiful childhood but also a complex one with family members coming and going, the real heart was nan and the aunts who really were wise witches in the best possible way. Great book to start the year with, keen to also read some of Jeanine Leane's poetry.
Would be interested to here what nonaustralian readers think of this one. Overall I was enthralled, I laughed, I got chills, I got mad and I got nostalgic.
