Mr Mercedes
by Stephen King
Although he is retired, ex-cop Bill Hodges still thinks about the Mercedes Massacre, one of the few cases he never managed to solve.
Brady Hartsfield, the murderer he never caught is preparing to kill again. This time will be the last time he kills, and he’s going to make sure it affects Hodges as much as he possibly can.
Mr Mercedes had its ups and downs, and was an altogether mediocre book. I liked the fact that we got to see both sides of the story, although I much preferred reading about Brady than I did about Bill. I thought that Hodges was a little irritating in parts, and that his allies, Jerome, and Holly uncovered more of the case than he did, despite the fact that neither of them had any experience in the field. Additionally, parts of the case were uncovered a little to quickly and came from nowhere, which made parts of the plot a little unbelievable.
Brady was a much more interesting character, and the ways in which he went about his scheming were very clever, and I couldn’t guess what he was going to do next, which added to the suspense of the story. He was a little twisted, and I enjoyed seeing his thought process and reasoning.
The ending was my least favourite part, I found it to be quite weak. So much tension was built for it to end in such a typical, boring, and predictable way. I was hoping that something different would happen, and so it was a bit of a let-down.
