True Grit by Charles Portis
4.0

True Grit has all you could want out of a Western novel. The plot revolves around Mattie Ross, a young girl who is searching for revenge for her father's unlawful murder. She teams up with a federal Marshall and a Texas Ranger, and the three set out to avenge Mattie's father and to collect the bounty for the capture of Chaney.
The protagonist Mattie is very well written, her voice comes out strong and believable throughout the book, as if you have picked up her private journal. As well, Cogburn comes across as the quintessential bad-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold, but his characters develops and becomes more complex as the novel continues.
