Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King
5.0
Dolores Claiborne is one of my favorites by Stephen King and I enjoyed rereading it. There are some horror stories that don't include ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, evil monsters or other supernatural creatures. Sometimes the monsters are real people. Dolores is a 65 year old woman appearing at the sheriff's office to tell her story. And does she tell it, right from the very beginning. In brief, Dolores was married to a human monster named Joe. He beat her and molested their daughter. She confided in her employer, a seemingly cold rich woman named Vera Donovan. Through hints, Vera planted a seed in Dolores' head about how to take care of her problem.
From the first read, I got that Vera killed her husband. What I didn't get was that she might have killed her two children too because they were blackmailing her. Dolores tricks Joe into chasing her and falling into an abandoned well. The fall doesn't kill him and he actually manages to climb out and she bashes him with a huge rock. The second fall killed him. And Dolores got away with the murder although many suspected her, including her own daughter.
Years later, Vera became disabled and Dolores cared for her. As Vera began to develop dementia, she began to hallucinate about wires and dust bunnies endangering her and Dolores had to "save" her. But one day, Dolores wasn't in time and Vera fell down the stairs. She wasn't killed and the parallels to Joe gave Dolores chills. Vera begged Dolores to help her die so Dolores went into the kitchen and brought back a rolling pin. To her relief, Vera died before she could get back.
Now everyone thinks Dolores did it again.
