The Gender of Mona Lisa 1 by Tsumuji Yoshimura

2.5

I'm not really sure how to feel about "The Gender of Mona Lisa". The topic of gender is actually written quiet well. I think it's important to have literature like this, especially coming from a country where gender roles are very rigid. It is a topic that is more present than ever and the use of gender neutral pronouns (in the German) version delighted me a lot since it is actually normal to grow up genderless until a certain age, but that is only biological and you can tell that society in this book is just the same as it is in the real world. There are a lot of prejudices and clichés surrounding gender.
All of this makes for an interesting read concerning how we as a society view gender, but then there is also this very exhausting "love triangle" where the love interests try to "change" the gender of our protagonist and that is not only kinda weird, it is staright up encroaching and that just didn't sit well with me. I'm not sure if I want to continue reading. I'm torn between exploring the whole gender topic more and how it unfolds and being somewhat "scared" of the very uncomfortable love triangle so far.
