Ofosua's mother sucks up too much energy in this book, and not in a good way. It takes a long time for the actual romance to get going And when it does they almost immediately break up because her mama can't mind her own business. This is the first book that I read about someone in the Ghanian culture, and I enjoyed that. It also would have been nice to see Cole actually work through some of issues with his mother and father. The uncle was dealt with, but the parental stuff needed more closure, I think. Overall it's not a bad book, but I'm going to remember her mother more than I'm going to remember the romance and that's not good. There are also a couple of moments in the book that get a little preachy for me, and considering who the audience probably is for this book I feel like it's unnecessary. It didn't make me feel seen, it just took me out of the story and made me feel a little bit annoyed.
Graphic: Sexual content, Toxic relationship
Moderate: Misogyny, Racism
Minor: Infidelity
