I love this book (I think the movie is good too). It's like a retelling of the story of Hosea in the Bible. It is set during the Gold Rush in the West of the United States. What I also like about this book is that even though the main character is a prostitute, the author doesn't go into unnecessary details but doesn't "sugar coat" it either. Woulld read this book again.
