The Deepest Breath by Meg Grehan

5.0

A book for middle grade children, whilst the protagonist Stevie says she is 11, she feels younger maybe 9-10, definitely still at primary school. Stevie has feelings for Chloe in her class and she doesn't understand them, in the same way she doesn't understand everything about the ocean. It's harder to find ways of understanding her feelings though. This is a wonderful book written in prose with very short sentences as a child would do, it very much captures what it is to be a child and also the confusion of having your first crush, especially when its for someone of the same gender.
