The Sellout
by Paul Beatty
Wow. Scathingly funny satire, but not for the NSFW language-sensitive. The narrator, a young black man from Dickens, California, finds himself facing the Supreme Court after appealing charges of resegregation and slavery. What could be funnier, right? In Paul Beatty's prose, the political commentary is mixed with wickedly witty historical and pop culture allusions. Even my hometown of Grand (Bland) Rapids gets mentioned.
I'll never get to teach this one in class, but just might recommend it to my most satire-savvy students.
