Boys In the Valley
by Philip Fracassi
3.5!!
this book was really good!! it was a little slow at the beginning but i got into it and read it pretty quickly. al thought i did enjoy it, there are a few things i wasn’t really a fan of.
first off, i would say the characters were a bit dull. sheik i did end up liking peter, i felt myself kind of bored with his and andrew’s scenes. i wish we saw more of the turmoil he felt between becoming a priest and wanting a life with grace because it felt like a kind of big plot point that wasn’t explored that deeply?? like it’s presented as an issue, not mentioned again, then peter becomes a priest in the last few chapters (i understand why im just a bit bothered by it). i also think peter was sort of a bland character for a while, like being the one who does good and takes care of everything, kind of like being a token main character. there didn’t seem to be a lot of depth to him. i honestly felt myself caring more about david, johnson, basil, and ben.
i did like the pov switch in some parts, but in the beginning it was really confusing because i couldn’t tell who was speaking. for a good chunk of the book i thought father white and andrew were the same person. i think i liked david’s and johnson’s chapters the most (though i wish we got more backstory on both)
the ending. :(
honestly, the ending felt sort of satisfying but i also didn’t really like it that much. i wish peter had lived and got to live a long life with grace and those he escaped with, but considering what happened, it makes sense why he died.
i knew he was going to die when he became a priest. i kind of hate that he became a priest, just because for most of the book he seemed disillusioned with religion and more focused on a life with grace, but it makes sense since peter doesn’t seem like the type of character to reject the dying wish of a man who raised him.
overall, it was a good book. there were some boring parts and some infuriating parts (like how poole kept insisting basil hung himself when it was so clearly not that) but yeah. this was a bit scrambled
