Saint X by Alexis Schaitkin

I have mixed feelings about this book. I think the problem for me was that this book is not as advertised. What seems to be a twisty thriller about a young American tourist who goes missing (then winds up dead) while on vacation with her parents and sister in the Caribbean is actually a character-driven coming-of-age tale story mixed with social commentary about race and class privilege. I wanted a palette cleanser after reading a long Jane Austen novel and this was not what I was expecting. I also found it boring. It dragged and delayed the *big twist reveal* until the end by which time I know longer cared AND already knew whodunit. Anyone paying attention to similar stories in the news the last 20+ years can figure it out as soon as the cast of characters is introduced in the first few chapters.

Despite how dull I found the parts of this book, I think it has some incredibly beautiful passages. This writer can write. I just don't know if they can tell a story. I also thought the commentary about race and class privilege was intriguing and gave me a lot to think about. I think for this reason it would make an excellent book for a book club or even a classroom. I may not have enjoyed listening to it, but I think it would generate terrific discussion.
