I've grown to love Zadie Smith, and I'm a bit surprised at how quickly this happened, and ashamed that it didn't happen earlier in my life. Her ability to humanize characters regardless of class, race, culture, or perceived "moral" good, and fully describe their lives and thoughts is astounding. Then she takes it further and uses these stories to illuminate themes and conditions that too often get ignored, especially with regards to the lives of the disadvantaged and downtrodden. And then if you listen to her audiobooks you get the added bonus of her lovely voice and skill with a variety of accents. I will have to dig deeper and go back again and again.
