Mister Magic

I liked this way better than Hide. It was also extremely gripping and unputdownable but the characters were infinitely better. However, I once again did not like the ending.
I think that it was very clear that there was something supernatural going on so that was not a surprise, but the way it was done just wasn't my favorite. After reading Hide and getting a grip of the author's writing I was not expecting an explanation of the supernatural part but I really wish the human part of the cult was explored more in depth. I think that the children of the main circle of characters could have been better used as well.
I really enjoyed the found family element (even though I kept doubting everyone on and off) which is one of the main reasons why I found the ending unsatisfying.
Another random thing that I noticed was that the mixed media just stopped at some point. I guess you could interpret that as the cult people deleting everything but I don't know.
Growing up in Brazil, I had no contact with mormonism at all. In fact, I only found out about it maybe 3 years ago. However, this year for some reason I fell deep into an ex-mormon content rabbit hole and now I know quite a lot about it, so for me it was extremely obvious from very early on that the book was critical of it, a message that got stronger as it went on.
To be completely honest, considering that the whole book is a metaphor for leaving mormonism, as confirmed by the author in the acknowledgements, I don't understand the meaning of the ending. All of the other characters "left" the cult (though they kept up with it) while Val just stayed to try to change it from the inside? Maybe I'm just dumb but that feels like it goes against the message of the novel.
I think that's it. Overall I enjoyed the book and found it very entertaining (I mean, I devoured it in two sittings) but the ending did not do it for me. There were some elements that were introduced but not really explored, the book probably could have benefited from like 50 more pages to tie all of these loose ends.
