Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood
by Marjorie M. Liu
In this volume the world introduced to readers from the first volume is expanded upon. Not only is more about Maika and her history revealed, but these issues spend time in a new city, Thyria, and exploring a mysterious island. Maika searches for clues about the mask fragment she has obtained and also to why her mother wanted with it. There are plenty of battles and new discoveries and settings to keep you interested and rapidly turning pages. This volume ends with a bit of a tease that made me very grateful that I had already gotten the next one already! The illustrations and panels are beautiful, detailing wonderful places and people (I particularly love the cats, which exist as a sentient, speaking race in this series) and the colors form a lovely aesthetic and add to the mood of the writing and contents of the story.
