Whore of New York: A Confession by Liara Roux

2.0

Whore of New York: Confessions of a Sinful Woman by Liara Roux. I really wanted to like this one, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me. The first section read a bit book-report-y and I found it disarming that she dove right into an extensively detailed description of her childhood before giving readers a reason to decide why they should care. I think the well-intentioned idea was to de-stigmatize the occupation of sex work by breaking down the stereotype that all sex workers are victims of human trafficking or come from poverty and unstable houses or are otherwise pressured into it against their will (which is a great message! BUT the delivery of it came across as oddly self-gratifying). The tone was light and conversational throughout and while I think Roux made several interesting points about the trade and how it can be an expression of feminism, it just never engaged me as a reader.
