The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins by Griffin McElroy, Clint McElroy, Justin McElroy, Travis McElroy, Carey Pietsch
5.0

If you haven’t listened to the Adventure Zone podcast, go listen. Start from episode 1 and listen to the whole first arc before you give up on it. Go ahead, I’ll wait... just know I’m jealous that you get to experience TAZ for the first time.

This is an absolutely charming adaptation of the first Balance arc. The change in character and place names (so as to avoid any infringement on Wizard of the Coast’s D&D intellectual property) is jarring to someone who’s a fan of the podcast, but ultimately done well enough that someone unfamiliar with the source material wouldn’t even notice.

Great art and fun story... the McElroys and Carey are faithful to the source material with a keen understanding of the things that will and won’t translate from one medium to another... I’m impressed and glad I bought a copy.

And seriously, if you haven’t listened to the podcast go do it. In their own words, the Adventure Zone is the story of four grown men who played D&D so hard they made themselves cry. They made me cry too. And if the graphic novels continue at this level of quality and faithfulness to the spirit of the original, I can guarantee I’ll cry again.
