The critical success of the television series actually takes away from the gritty reality that Bissinger evokes. While reading this, I could see the expansive Texas landscape and sympathize with the despair each of these characters faced. Bissinger's crass persona bleeds through the text while pulling the reader along this heartbreaking emotional journey of a Texas town enveloped by both annually renewed hope and inevitably failed dreams.
