Burn for Burn by Jenny Han, Siobhan Vivian

What.

When I finished the book, I thought it was a standalone, but now I can see it's part of a trilogy. I didn't really get attached to anybody, and the ending was so sudden and unsatisfying that I'm not even interested in the sequel. I don't think it even qualifies as a cliffhanger, because it all happened so fast and awkwardly that I just ended up confused.

SpoilerThere's some weird subplot about Mary having paranormal powers? That really doesn't gel with the rest of the story. I was expecting a straightforward contemporary without supernatural elements, and the introduction/the role of Mary's powers at the climax was so weak that I finished up thinking she was imagining it. Nothing in the book suggested a paranormal subplot until it came out of nowhere.
