Beartown by Fredrik Backman

5.0

Where do I even start? I started this book on a long drive and the heavier themes (trigger warning: rape, misogyny, language, crude humor) made me pause…wasn’t sure if it was a good book to read over Christmas. So after Christmas, i picked it back up on a long drive to finish it.

It turned out to be so good. How does he do this? All his books unveil bit by bit. And he was able to dig into deep psychological themes and his characters felt realistic in their views, motives, and actions.

The characters were so interesting. I was really glad to have a somewhat positive resolution to the horrible situation. And to see how people in the town that you didn’t think could change, did change. And how the courage of the few, impacted the many in critical ways.

It was hard to follow while listening because the author jumps back and forth between characters. But still, one of the best books I’ve read this year.
