I kept thinking it was getting better and was holding out for Mathilde’s perspective. I ended up hating it more.
Groff’s prose is inconsistent and the story focused on the shock value with very little growth over the decades we follow these characters. She gave us a book the was 80% Lotto and less than 20% was actually Mathilde. We spent so much time on Lotto’s backstory leading up to the events of the relationship and then did not do the same for Mathilde or give either character personal growth. These characters were not real to me, just vengeful horny shadows.
