Fairest, Volume 4: Of Men and Mice by Adam Hughes, Marc Andreyko, Shawn McManus, Todd Klein, Lee Loughridge

4.0

This one was a quick one-hour read. It may only deserve three stars based on the story but I was so happy to see this volume focus on more of the female characters in the Fables/Fairest world that I was feeling generous.

I got a little lost somewhere along the way. Who is Brandish again? And when did the Fairy Godmother go crazy? I wonder if skipping the Jack of Fables series messed me up.

The art is gorgeous, as usual. Maybe Brandish wasn't as recognizable for switching artists, but it was still well done with some flavor of anime.

The big thing that I loved was that the story started with Snow, moved on to Cind, then had the Fairy Godmother and a little Rose Red in there. The male characters of Marcel and Rama were truly secondary. Adding an affair between Rama and Cind was interesting as was the temple of Rats.

In all, this should probably be a three star review. The story part of this volume was light, but at least the writers stuck to the female Fables this time. Perhaps it's time to consider bringing a female writer into this female-led series? The storyline of this volume didn't need to be this light. I love that Cind takes her pleasure where she can get it and move on, but they have Cind acting like Prince Charming did in the first few volumes of Fables. Women don't "love 'em and leave 'em" like men do. Or, at least their motivations aren't the same. There is more story there that could be written because Cind doesn't seem like a flat, callous man-user to me. Give her more story and more depth and this could be a legitimate 4 star review rather than an overly generous one.
