Thank You for Calling the Lesbian Line was a book I was probably the most excited to read when I heard of its existence earlier in the year, and god was it a great read!

This book explores the women who reached out and volunteered for the Lesbian Line in the UK during the 80s and 90s, while also talking about her own journey with her queerness. There’s discussions of first crushes and breakups, loneliness and illness, and most importantly- celebrating the lives of the queer women who came before us.

I absolutely adored everything about this book. As a 21 year old lesbian who’s trying to read more non-fiction (and trying to learn more about the lgbtq+ community), I learned not only that these lesbian lines existed but that- as Lovatt wonderfully encompasses- we have always been here.

Not only does she touch on the positives of the lesbian community, but also how lesbians treated both trans lesbians and lesbians of colour. I think it’s extremely vital that we do not forget how people within our community were treated, and Lovatt does a brilliant job of stressing that it is detrimental to our survival that we support each other to be able to create safer, more inclusive spaces where we can exist freely.

I loved everything about this book. It’s one that I would recommend not only to fellow lesbians and queer people, but to everyone who wants to read more about strength and the value of recording our histories. I may be biased, but I think we’re a pretty resilient group of people.
