Zoe's Tale by John Scalzi
4.0

Admittedly not quite as strong as Scalzi's previous three in the Old Man's War series, Zoe's Tale is still full of poignant, vivid, and meaningful moments. Zoe's Game is to The Last Colony that Ender's Shadow was to Ender's game- an emotional and meaningful look at what someone else was seeing while the first story was progressing. Of particular meaning to me was getting more of Zoe's relationship with the Obin, who I've always had a soft spot for.

Sure, this book isn't free of flaws. Zoe sometimes feels a little bit too witty and put together for her age (very much like an echo of a recognizable voice-one of our previous narrators, John Perry), but other times she's appropriately teen-like, and the story is strong enough for me to have character buy in, even when she's being exceptionally loquacious. The book had a slow start, but by the end I'm reminded so much of why I like Scalzi's work. Through aliens, he gets to the heart of what it means to be a being, to be conscious, to be good, and without exception so far, I come away from each of his books with vivid unforgettable images of scenes that leave me thinking for days, and maybe even years, after.
