I found myself not enjoying this a lot for the most part, but then I have to say, the author really pulled it back in the final third and by the end I did have a smile on my face!
My problem with the rest of the book was that it was all incredibly surface level - for all that the main female protagonist worries about revealing her true self and strives to keep what makes her, her, hidden, means that as a reader I was also very frustrated. I was left with an unknown, very stifled, two dimensional main character as a narrator and we're the ones who are meant to be inside her head? We don't hear/read from any other perspectives, which only adds to this feeling of one dimensionality and in my opinion is also a shame, as I found I would have loved to have read more about Devon and his journey.
Also the constant clumsiness and emotional unintelligence of our main character frustrated me no end! How many times do I have to read about her tripping over?!
I almost dnf-ed this but then I have to say, I found the final third, when the protagonist finally starts evolving, to be rather heartwarming and I'm pleased I continued to the end. It was a surprisingly lovely reminder about embracing what brings us joy, pursuing our passions, nurturing our inner childhood and returning to some of those childhood joys, and finding the strength to be our true selves. The little christmassy trip to New York was also a pleasure to read.
All in all, finally gave me some Christmas joy I was hoping to find within!
