Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid

2.0

This coming-of-age story centers around an Antiguan girl whose society is still under British rule. Annie John is a very poetic and haunting piece that viscerally divulges the complicated feelings surrounding parents and the process of growing up. I found it very poignant and honest in its commentary on the fine line between love and hate, life and death, and rebellion and conformity.
